This is the first of a series of posts about the “Critical Thinking in Safety” lab put on by Lund University in Lund, Sweden as part of their Human Factors in System Safety MSc. I attended as a non-degree-seeking participant for the 5 day lab, and found myself in the company of a diverse group from many industries. Aviation, maritime, health, child welfare, nuclear power, the military, and other industries were all represented.

My quest was to help SRE at Microsoft learn from the social sciences, particularly Human Factors, when it comes to learning from system outages and how to build resilient complex systems. Having spent time in Ops, I understand full well that any conception of a system that doesn’t include the human operators is woefully inadequate.

In this series of posts, I will discuss key takeaways from each day and how they can apply to the world of tech.

The content from this series is also now available as part of the eBook “Notes on Complexity” on Gumroad, Leanpub, and Amazon Kindle.
